There are only eight texts in the New Testament Bible that writes about Sunday, which is the first day of the week. Let us look at these texts and see if God has made Sunday into a holy day.
- What did Matthew say about the women who came to the tomb of Jesus early on the first day of the week: Sunday?
Matt 28:1 “Now after the Sabbath (Saturday), as the first day (Sunday) of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.”
Matthew mentions nothing about the first day of the week (Sunday) being a holy day in this text.
- Why did the women come to the tomb, after the Sabbath (Saturday) was over?
Mark 16:1 “Now when the Sabbath (Saturday) was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint him (Jesus).”
Mark does not mention that Sunday here is a holy day.
- Who did Jesus reveal himself to later on that first day (Sunday) of the week?
Mark 16:9 “Now when He rose early on the first day (Sunday) of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.”
Again Mark does not mention anything about the first day of the week (Sunday) being a holy day.
- What did the women do on the Sabbath (Saturday) and on the first day (Sunday) of the week?
Luke 23:54-56. 24:1. The day was the Preparation (Friday), and the Sabbath (Saturday) drew near. And the women who had come with him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and fragment oils. And they rested on the Sabbath (Saturday) according to the commandment. Now on the first day (Sunday) of the week, very early in the morning, they and certain women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.”
OK! According to Luke who was an historian and a medical doctor, writes that the women rested on the Sabbath, which is on a Saturday. This was a holy day according to the Jews and the rest of the Bible. Nowhere does Luke mention that the first day, which is a Sunday is a rest or holy day.
- What did Maria find when she came to the tomb on Sunday morning?
John 20:1 Now on the first day (Sunday) of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
John who was Jesus closest disciple, does not mention in this text that the first day of the week, which is a Sunday is a holy day.
- Why did the disciples meet in the evening on the first day (Sunday) of the week?
Joh 20:19 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day (Sunday) of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
This was not a religious service the disciples were holding, as some may think, but they were behind locked doors, for fear of the Jews who might persecute them as they did to Jesus.
- What part of the first day (Sunday) of the week did Paul hold his farewell meeting in Troas?
Acts 20:7.8. Now on the first day (Sunday) of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight. There were many lamps in the upper room where they were gathered together.
The term “breaking bread” is used for the communion service. The communion service was used not only on a Sabbath, but on any other day of the week. Acts 2:46. Paul was having communion on the first day (Sunday) of the week in the evening until midnight. Many lamps were in the room to give light. Nowhere does it say in this text that the first day (Sunday) is a holy day.
- What did Paul say that the Christians should do on the first day (Sunday) of the week?
1 Cor 16:1.2. Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: On the first day (Sunday) of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collection when I come.
Nowhere does Paul state that the first day (Sunday) of the week is a holy day in this text. He was asking the Christians in Galatia to make a collection on that day for the people in Jerusalem.

Nowhere in these eight texts from the New Testament Bible does it state that the first day of the week, which is a Sunday, should be held as a holy day.
